Obama may speak on Libya later today

President Obama will likely make a statement on Libya either this afternoon or tomorrow, White House spokesman Jay Carney said today.

While Obama has condemned the Libyan violence in a written statement, he has held off commenting in public as the U.S. has worked to get Embassy employees and other Americans out of the war-torn country.

The president will decide whether to speak after meeting this afternoon with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"They will obviously discuss Libya," Carney said.

Clinton has condemned the violence in Libya, as dictator Moammar Gadhafi has unleashed his army and mercenaries on protesters of his four-decade rule.

Carney also said the U.S. is speaking with international partners about ways to pressure Gadhafi's government into giving up violence. Carney wouldn't be specific, but alternatives could range from an economic embargo to establishing no-fly zones over the nation.

"We are reviewing a variety of options with our international partners," Carney said.
