Trend Micro Releases Cloud Computing Malware Protection

Coming on the coat tails of Norton’s recent security release, Trend Micro released its latest security package with a complete revamp. Trend Micro has given this new security package the name of Titanium. The new products that were released are Titanium Internet Security, Titanium Maximum Security and Titanium Antivirus+. What these new products offer are an array of new and different features including malware detection using cloud computing. In other words, they are using information stored on the Internet to detect malware.According to Trend Micro, the average malware stays in circulation for about three days before a new variant comes out. In some cases, it only lasts about fifteen minutes before the next variation comes out. This presents a significant problem to individual computers and to network administrators. How does an administrator get an updated version of the security software onto the computer to recognize the Malware in time? It could take longer than the 15 minutes it takes for a new variation to come out and by then, the computer might be infected."Titanium 2011 is an all-around win for consumers," said Carol Carpenter, executive general manager for the Consumer and Small Business units at Trend Micro. "Our new technology takes family and PC protection to entirely new heights and is the most effective way to challenge the explosion of real world online threats that we expect will continue indefinitely. It's a major upgrade for our customers, for Trend Micro and for the industry."

Now, with the cloud computing format to take over, Trend Micro hopes that they’ll be able to catch the malware before it reaches your PC. Therefore, if it never hits the PC, it never has to be defended against, removed or otherwise dealt with. This is where Trend Micro is hoping to really hit it home with customers.

The way it works is straight forward. Using a reputation system on its databases, Trend Micro screens a file to see if it fits within the parameters set by the company to describe a piece of malware. If it fits within these parameters, it is flagged and isn’t sent to your computer. However, if the file doesn’t meet those parameters, it’s sent through. This allows the databases to be updated quickly without the computer having to update as well.Another impact that will be felt by users is that, according to Trend Micro, the impact on PC’s performance will be greatly reduced now that they are dealing with cloud computing. Since most of the software is online, users won’t need to run a big, bulky program. The Titanium suite went on sale on September 8th. Titanium Antivirus+ is $40, Titanium Internet Security is $50 and Titanium Maximum Security is $60 with different packages adding more cost.
