SPO1 Adonis Dumpit is incapable of shooting an unarmed civilian, his police superior said.
Supt. Pablo Labra II testified in favor of Dumpit who is on trial for the 2004 murder of a robbery suspect.
Labra, deputy director of the Cebu City Police Office, was the fifth witness presented by the defense in the case heard by before Regional Trial Court Judge Ester Veloso of Branch 6.
?I know him to be a good man and a dedicated policeman,? Labra told the court.
Labra was chief of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch of the city police when Dumpit shot dead 17-year-old Ronron Go allegedly out of self-defense in barangay Tejero, Cebu City on Dec. 14, 2004.
Labra said the police received two robbery alarms in barangay Tejero that day.
Go, along with two other teenagers, were pointed to as the robbers when policemen responded to the first alarm. Labra said he ordered the arrest of the suspects.
Later that afternoon, the police received another robbery alarm in Tejero. When Labra arrived in the area, he said he saw a policeman carrying the bloodied body of Go.
Labra said he ordered the policemen to bring the wounded Go to the hospital. He said Dumpit claimed one of the robbers fired a shot at him.
Labra described Go as part of the robbery group in Tejero.
On cross-examination, lawyer Alfred Yann Oguis of the Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas asked Labra if the police official knew about ?several charges? earlier filed against Dumpit for firing at unarmed civilians.
Labra said no.
?You don't know your police officer that well,? Oguis told Labra in open court.
Labra said no policeman was requested by the National Bureau of Investigation in Central Visayas (NBI-7) to shed light on the incident.
