Few benefits of the Bluetooth technology

The Bluetooth technology may be old but its versatility and well though on architecture still keep it alive and will do so for few more years. Here are some key features of this old but golden wireless protocol.

1. It is wireless. Obviously you see the benefit of no cables lurking around your whole room, so it is useless to spend more time explaining this benefit of the Bluetooth protocol.

2. It is highly automated and reliable. When you want a device connected you just select it and that is it. You do not have to worry about its IP address and network settings. You just need its name and access password to get connected in no time. The well standardized protocol ensures stability and reliability of each Bluetooth device connected to the host.

3. It is affordable technology. As it is few years old, many manufacturers now make Bluetooth chipsets, making the devices very cheap and affordable to almost anyone that wants them.

4. High resistance to different interferences. The Bluetooth hardware uses specialized technique to avoid interferences, called frequency hopping. It constantly changes the frequency of the signal transmitted if it senses its strength is dropping, thus ensuring enough data go through to the host even in worst radio noise conditions.

5. Low Power output. The Bluetooth protocol device does not require high output power to maintain secure communication with the host up to 30ft. away. Thanks to this, the batteries required are much smaller in terms of capacity, more importantly in size. This allows the creation of very small and easy to care devices (just remember the smallest handsfree you saw, it was never possible to create such small sized radio transmission devices before).

6. Easy creation of whole networks of devices. Crucial part of the Bluetooth standard is the ability to create small networks in a very easy way. Looking a little bit like the LAN in structure, the so called PANs (personal area networks) created with Bluetooth devices are set up with just dragging and dropping, allowing very fast and easy creation of a network of interconnected devices.

7. Regular updates to the technology. With every new version of the Bluettoth protocol new features are added and it becomes even easier to use, allowing faster communication, sharing of voice and video over the PAN, etc. The current 3.0 version is nearly twice the speed of the old 2.0 standard.

Having said all these the new addition to the Wi-Fi based devices which will allow them to communicate directly with each other holds the potential to replace the Bluetooth completely as it is much faster and more reliable. Still, with new Bluetooth standard being currently created, the outcome of the battle is not yet clear.
