Nicholas Courtney, who played Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart on "Doctor Who," has died at the age of 81. Courtney's agent told the BBC that the actor passed away after a short illness.
Playing "the Brigadier" was the defining role of his career. Courtney first appeared on "Doctor Who" in 1965, playing a different role, and first became the Brigadier in 1968. He appeared regularly on the show through the '70s, then reprised the role in specials in the '80s, for a total of 107 episodes. In 2008, he also showed up on two episodes of "The Sarah Jane Adventures," a "Doctor Who" spinoff.
Courtney was born in 1929 in Egypt, where his father was working as a diplomat.
