Co-Founder Larry Page to Become CEO of Google

It’s been a big day of news for Google. They had a very solid Q4 profit report which looks as if the company is growing even more. However, that’s nothing in comparison to the blowout news that Larry Page, co-founder of Google, was going to be replacing Eric Schmidt as CEO.

According to Google, the transition will take place on April 4th.

The role that Schmidt is expected to take on is “Executive Chairman.” According to the company, he’ll focus on “deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership.” On top of that, Schmidt will continue to advise Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin.

There is no change in Brin’s position other than co-founder, but he’ll be responsible for “strategic projects, in particular working on new products.”

In a blog post, Eric Schmidt said about Larry Page:

We’ve been talking about how best to simplify our management structure and speed up decision making for a long time. By clarifying our individual roles we’ll create clearer responsibility and accountability at the top of the company. In my clear opinion, Larry is ready to lead and I’m excited about working with both him and Sergey for a long time to come.

On the other side, Larry Page had this to say:

Eric has clearly done an outstanding job leading Google for the last decade. The results speak for themselves. There is no other CEO in the world that could have kept such headstrong founders so deeply involved and still run the business so brilliantly. Eric is a tremendous leader and I have learned innumerable lessons from him. His advice and efforts will be invaluable to me as I start in this new role. Google still has such incredible opportunity–we are only at the beginning and I can’t wait to get started.

This isn’t the first time that Page has been CEO of Google. He was CEO from inception to about ten years ago when they brought in Schmidt. Now, he’ll be going back to that position once again.

A lot has changed since the times of Page’s first time as CEO. Google is now one of the largest companies in the world, they have a cell phone operating system and are expanding into other markets. However, one thing does remain: can Page continue bringing the company the success that Schmidt did?

With Schmidt backing Page up, there’s no reason why he won’t.
