As was reported last week on TopBits, Yahoo issued a statement explaining that it had fired 600 employees. On top of that, a slide was leaked that showed which properties owned by Yahoo were going to be shut down. One of those was Del.icio.us.
The pandemonium on the Internet from the fear of losing all of their bookmarks sent many people in a quest to find a way to get the bookmarks off Delicious. However, 24 hours after this slide was leaked, Yahoo came out with a statement.
Their statement stated that, “No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.”
This calmed people down, but it had many in the media very frustrated because Yahoo pointed the blame at the media for causing this problem.
“We can only imagine how upsetting the news coverage over the past 24 hours has been to many of you. Speaking for our team, we were very disappointed by the way that this appeared in the press. We’ll let you know more as things develop,” the statement said, in conclusion.
Leena Rao, a writer for TechCrunch, was one who wrote back against the statement. “If they would have said all of this yesterday and been more responsive, then there could not have been so much speculation. It took Yahoo 24 hours to admit that Delicious won’t be shut down after all?” she questioned.
It does present some interesting speculation about Delicious. Did Yahoo really intend on closing down Delicious? Why would it take them 24 hours to come back with a response?
The belief is that Yahoo wanted to close Delicious down, but when this slide was genuinely leaked, they had to respond. And, considering how negative the responses they got from their users was, they only had one option.
So, instead of pointing the blame at the media, Yahoo should be looking at their own PR team for taking an entire day to put together a response. This is the Internet; a day is a millennium. The only question now is who will buy Delicious?
