RIM Says Competition Taking Advantage of India Problems

Research In Motion has accused unnamed competitors of trying to compound and profit from its problems in India by "suggesting or implying" that RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) will be singled out by Indian regulators, even as their own products that use encryption will escape scrutiny.

RIM said in a customer update on Tuesday that it had been assured by senior Indian government officials that it would not be singled out, and that any policy relating to "lawful access" requirements for encrypted enterprise or VPN (virtual private network) communications would be applied to all products and services that use encryption in India.

The company also debunked reports that it was under an obligation to provide access to communications on BES to Indian law enforcement agencies by a Jan. 31 deadline, the company said.

The Jan. 31 deadline was a "mutually agreed target" date between RIM and the Indian government only for the delivery of a solution to Indian carriers for lawful access to RIM's consumer messaging services, which include BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry Internet Service email. The interception facility was delivered to carriers ahead of schedule, RIM said.

Indian government officials were not immediately available to comment on RIM's update.

RIM has maintained that it cannot technically provide access to BES, its corporate service.

India now wants to demand access to communications on BES through mobile service providers, according to reports. Indian law allows the government to require operators to provide access when directed.

But RIM has said in the past that the architecture of the BES does not allow either RIM or service providers the technical ability to access communications on that platform, as the encryption keys are held by customers.

RIM is trying to expand the scope of the discussion on interception with the Indian government to ensure that other providers of products and services using end-to-end encryption, a feature of enterprise grade virtual private networks (VPNs), are also included in a "lawful access" policy by the government.

It hinted on Tuesday at which other companies it would like included in this discussion, when it referred to Apple, Cisco, Good Technology, Google, Hewlett-Packard, HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson in a partial list of technology companies that utilize strong encryption in their products and services in India.

The Indian government has previously said it would demand lawful access to communications on Google and Skype's services, but has not taken any action so far in this direction.

Few Common Computer problems and their easiest solutions

Modern day computers and laptops are complicated pieces of technology and a common rule of engineering states that the more complicated the piece of equipment is, the more prone to failures it will be. And sadly, modern computer system or laptop is much more probable to have a serious problem. Of course, in most cases the problem is easily solvable, and in some cases by the end-user himself. Here are some examples of common problems and fast fixes.

1. If your laptop does not even turn on

Pretty obviously the problem may be in the battery. But you will not believe how often the battery is ok, and the power adapter has been unplugged by another person. So take a look at the battery charging light and if it is off, go find the other end of the power cable and plug the charger in. If it is plugged in but the battery is still not charging, it may have failed, but another common problem is a failed safety fuse of the electrical grid of the building. Check it out and in case it is OK, start searching more complex solutions (or call service technician). If your battery is too old, it may have failed, so if you have a spare one it is always a good idea to put it on to see if the problem is solved.

2. If your computer or laptop feel slower and slower with every passing day.

With every new program you install on your laptop or desktop, your Windows installation becomes slower and slower. It has to store the information in its registry, keep track on changes of the files etc. If you have installed many programs that stay active in the taskbar you may bring even more powerful computer to its knees in no time. Also, another common mistake is installing 2 antivirus or antispyware programs that are active at the same time. This may cause interconnected checks of each file to be carried on, slowing your system down up to 2 times. Always use only one active checking antivirus system.

3. If you cannot connect to Internet

Many laptops have a hardware switch that disconnects the WiFi card physically, to securely stop outer access to your machine, did you check it? From time to time it gets pressed accidentally, leaving you with no Internet access. Also check the WiFi router to which you connect, it may have failed due to a power surge for example, or may simply need restart. If you have specialized software application that helps you connect to WiFi hotspots check its settings, so check its settings too, your WiFi card may have been disabled by it too. Restarting your laptop or desktop is always a good idea, even better is full stop the starting of the machine again. In most cases this solves the problems connected to WiFi or LAN access.

Of course these are not the only cases in which you may need help to start your normal work. If you cannot find suitable information on the web or are not sure in your own ability to handle the problem, it is always a good idea to call a specialist to do the job, to avoid damaging your software.
