Amazon Adds Streaming Video Service for Prime Members

Amazon has launched its streaming video service for paying Amazon Prime customers, making good on its rumored plans to duke it out with Netflix.

Amazon Prime Instant Video has a catalog of more than 5,000 commercial-free streaming movies and TV shows. The service is a free add-on for subscribers to Amazon's $79-per-year Amazon Prime membership, which grants free two-day shipping, no minimum order size requirement and a price reduction on one-day shipping.

You can watch Amazon's offerings on your Mac, PC or streaming media device, such as the Roku or an Internet-connect TV.

In case you were wondering, Amazon's catalog of movies and TV shows are not superior to Netflix's - in fact, they're essentially the same, except fewer. Most of the Amazon Prime Instant Video titles highlighted on the site - such as "Eyes Wide Shut," "March of the Penguins," and "Food Inc." - are all available on Netflix Watch Instantly, which boasts roughly 20,000 streaming video selections.

But Amazon's goal (at least for the moment) isn't besting Netflix's selection, or even becoming the leader in online streaming; rather, Amazon seems to be leveraging Amazon Prime. A market analyst told The Hollywood Reporter that bundling Amazon Prime with instant streaming is the company's way of offering "Netflix's core streaming feature as part of a more valuable, broader package."

The value is there for some, but not all. If you can't stop clicking "Buy Now with 1-Click" and would rather not slog through Netflix's endless array of subpar films, an Amazon Prime membership - which works out to be cheaper than Netflix's $7.99-per-month streaming-only plan - may be your best route. But if you aren't a frequent online shopper and do want to watch "Troll 2" (which you absolutely do and you know it), an Amazon Prime membership is only $1.35 less per month.

One small but pertinent selling point is the diversity among Amazon Prime's selections. Viewers get a choice of a subtitled or English-dubbed version of "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest," for instance, which ought to please those who hate "reading" movies.

While I don't think thousands of Netflix subscribers will cancel their memberships based on this announcement, I do think that Amazon Prime Instant Video is a service to keep tabs on. If Amazon can weed through Netflix's heaps of rubbish and offer the brightest gems with the option to customize (subtitles for any film would be nice), Amazon may have just unveiled a potential Netflix-killer.

Amazon Unveils Netflix-esque Prime Streaming Service

Amazon on Tuesday unveiled its long-rumored movie streaming service. Amazon Prime members -- the ones who pay $79 per year for free two-day shipping and discounted overnight shipping -- can now stream more than 5,000 movies and TV shows.

Much like Netflix's Watch Instantly service, Amazon's video-on-demand offering already integrates with numerous Internet televisions and set-top boxes, including Roku devices. Of note, however, is that there's currently no way to watch Amazon video with Apple TV or iOS devices.

Amazon's video streaming options will look familiar to anyone who's perused Netflix's own streaming catalog, with a focus on older titles, though newer releases like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy are also available. Each services streams movies that the other doesn't; Amazon, for example, offers "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," and Netflix streams more than 10,000 movies-double Amazon's initial offering.

The Prime Instant Videos service is available only to paying Amazon Prime customers-notably excluding free participants in sub-Prime programs like Amazon Mom. Amazon's launch of its new membership-based streaming service, coupled with Redbox's recent announcement that it too plans to enter the streaming game suggests that Blockbuster's bankruptcy woes won't be ending anytime soon.

Netflix introduced its $8/month streaming-only plan in November 2010 that works out to $96 per year, versus Amazon's $79 price point, which of course also includes the free two-day shipping incentive.

Kindle Becomes Best Selling Item on Amazon

When Apple announced last January that they were releasing the iPad, many believed that it would kill the Kindle and any other e-reader. Why would anyone want to purchase something that did only one task—reading—when they could have something that could do a lot of different tasks including reading?

Amazon made the wise choice to go in the opposite direction of Apple. While Apple moved in the direction of making a more expensive tablet that could do many different functions, Amazon moved in the direction of a lightweight and inexpensive reader. The iPad starts at $500 while the Kindle starts at $140.

This significant price difference has helped Amazon to increase their market share and get a significant number of buyers. So many, in fact, that it has become the highest selling item ever on Amazon.

The company announced on Monday that the Third Generation Kindle had beaten out “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh book in the series, which had previously held the record.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon went so far as to include in a press release about how different the iPad and Kindle are. ““We’re seeing that many of the people who are buying Kindles also own an LCD tablet. Customers report using their LCD tablets for games, movies and Web browsing, and their Kindles for reading sessions,” Mr. Bezos said in the release. He went on to say that the price of the Kindle is “low enough that people don’t have to choose” between devices.

One of the other factors that have contributed to the success of the Kindle is their software. They have made it available on all different e-readers, computers and devices. Therefore, users can start reading an e-book on a computer and then continue reading it on a different device. This allows people to get used to the Kindle book store.

On the other hand, the Apple bookstore is only available on some of Apple’s products. This limits the number of people that are using it.

With the number of Kindle sales obviously on the rise, it is apparent that Amazon is going to continue holding the monopoly in e-book sales. However, they are going to have to continue fighting hard to ensure that Android tablets that are being released don’t destroy its lead.
