The desktop PC becomes outdated!

The identity of a modern office is the PC that stands proudly and prominently on the desks of almost every member of the staff. The office networks of businesses still rely on the desktop computer. The question whether the PC is out dated gets a firm no as an answer. There is no sign in the horizon of anything to replace this wonderful piece of furniture. The end of the desktop era will come when some great genius will invent a more powerful and more reliable device to take over.

Technology has come a long way since the early version of desktop computers first appeared on our office desks. Laptops or notebooks are now status symbols of modern executives. These portable devices are now indispensible companions. And the new generation smart phones do everything a computer does. Good reason for some techies to believe that the desktop is on the verge of extinction. Remember the Atari and the cassette tape. A few years back one could not imagine life without these. Now they are dumped away in the backyards of our memory. The desktop computers destiny may not be different. But that day is definitely not anywhere near.

Individuals of course have already embraced the convenience of the handy, powerful and stylish genre of modern computers. Smart phone of today can perform the most of the functions till today done by Desktop computers only. This allows people to execute their duties from anywhere any time. The portable device in your pocket acts as a virtual desktop. Most phones also allow you to create documents and upload them to emails right on your phone. The user can read and send e-mail, download attachments, browse the web or visit social networks all from the little device in his or her pocket or hand bag.

Mobile phones are more than just a device for communication now. They do everything a computer do and more. Internet, e-mail and social network are features found even in the basic low priced models. Banking, shopping and even business meetings are done through cell phones these days.

A new breed called the smart phones invaded our lives and today they have evolved into Personal digital assistants PDA. Electronic books and handheld pads, like the iPad, are slowly pushing the traditional desktop in obscurity. Devices like e-book readers no bigger than the size of a magazine have the capacity to store hundreds of books or thousands of documents. These fast evolving devices are eliminating not just the good old desktops but the fancy lap tops do not seem to have any longevity.

But in spite of all this developments, people are reluctant to throw away the beloved desktop PC which evokes some nostalgic memories.

Kindle Becomes Best Selling Item on Amazon

When Apple announced last January that they were releasing the iPad, many believed that it would kill the Kindle and any other e-reader. Why would anyone want to purchase something that did only one task—reading—when they could have something that could do a lot of different tasks including reading?

Amazon made the wise choice to go in the opposite direction of Apple. While Apple moved in the direction of making a more expensive tablet that could do many different functions, Amazon moved in the direction of a lightweight and inexpensive reader. The iPad starts at $500 while the Kindle starts at $140.

This significant price difference has helped Amazon to increase their market share and get a significant number of buyers. So many, in fact, that it has become the highest selling item ever on Amazon.

The company announced on Monday that the Third Generation Kindle had beaten out “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh book in the series, which had previously held the record.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon went so far as to include in a press release about how different the iPad and Kindle are. ““We’re seeing that many of the people who are buying Kindles also own an LCD tablet. Customers report using their LCD tablets for games, movies and Web browsing, and their Kindles for reading sessions,” Mr. Bezos said in the release. He went on to say that the price of the Kindle is “low enough that people don’t have to choose” between devices.

One of the other factors that have contributed to the success of the Kindle is their software. They have made it available on all different e-readers, computers and devices. Therefore, users can start reading an e-book on a computer and then continue reading it on a different device. This allows people to get used to the Kindle book store.

On the other hand, the Apple bookstore is only available on some of Apple’s products. This limits the number of people that are using it.

With the number of Kindle sales obviously on the rise, it is apparent that Amazon is going to continue holding the monopoly in e-book sales. However, they are going to have to continue fighting hard to ensure that Android tablets that are being released don’t destroy its lead.
